7.

Snow told Doug to meet them back at his place.

By the time he pulled up the drive, his brother and the man he’d met earlier, Mr. Brooks were already stocking up the same beat up old car that Abe and Big John had used to help him out earlier. John stood nearby. He looked nervous, but Doug assumed he was worried about the car.

Historically speaking, Snow was not known for being gentle with equipment. As a kid, he broke everything, including a couple of lawnmowers, which had irritated their father. That paled in comparison to the car he’d flipped over out on old Harry McCarty Road when he was sixteen. The car was a total loss, but flipping end over end would do that to any car.

Luckily, Snow had walked away with barely a scratch.

Their dad hit the roof.

Things had been tense between father and son before the wreck, but that was the moment, the inciting incident where things became strained. For the next two years, Douglas and Samantha walked a delicate tightrope around them both, even once they no longer lived under the same roof. The only safe harbor in those days was their grandfather’s farm. Archer Snow made sure his home was a demilitarized zone, which was ironic considering the family history.

Then one day his brother was gone.

And now, ten years later, he was back. Douglas was happy to build a new relationship with Abe, but they were starting from scratch like two strangers recently introduced. Missing ten years had that effect. Abe was almost a stranger to him now.

Everyone acted as though Snow was unpredictable, but Douglas knew better. If there was one constant in his brother’s life, this was it. He always returned to their grandfather’s farm.

And this time he brought company with him.

While Snow and Mr. Brooks loaded weapons into the car, Big John Salmon watched quietly, keeping distance between him and the weapons. He was still on parole and had kept himself far away from trouble since his release, but the big guy had a hard time saying “no” to Snow. Douglas hoped his participation didn’t blow back on him or get him back into old, familiar patterns.

Grandpa Archer stood apart also, talking on the phone, and waving his hands erratically, passing the phone from one to the other as he gestured. Like most of the Snow family, Archer liked to ‘talk’ with his hands.

“Looks like you’re preparing for war,” Douglas told his brother once he stepped out of the car.

“I hope not,” Snow said with a playful smile as he pushed an earwig into his ear. “But you never know.”

“It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it,” Douglas recited.

“That’s how you do it.” He dropped a bag into the back seat of the car. “She still in the same place?”

“Tough to know for sure. The phone hasn’t moved, but it’s possible they took it from her. I can’t think of any reason the kidnappers would have let her keep it.
